There is a fascinating history to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just across the dividing line from nearby Thailand, in which gambling hall gambling is prohibited. Eight gambling dens are based in a relatively tiny location in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia casinos is in an excellent spot, a three to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest betting centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The amazing income gained from the gambling dens ranges from $7.5 million to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a number of restrictions requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; however, financing sources are vague. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and although visas are for all intents and purposes required to cross, there are methods around this, as is real of many borders.
The first Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving just a single gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked boat gambling den, highlights one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 60 tables. The Naga gambling den never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, 4 tables of chemin de fer, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly opened. A total of 150 slots and five table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four one armed bandits and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slot machine games and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and ninety six table games, including 87 baccarat (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slots and 66 of the normal gaming tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, again a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-around vacation and hotel compound that contains a number of amenities accompanying the gambling hall, which has ten thousand sq.ft. of 130 slot machines and eighty eight table games.
