There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling dens that sit just over the border from neighboring Thailand, where gambling den gambling is banned. Eight gambling halls are established in a relatively small space in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling dens is in a perfect area, a 3 to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The amazing income gained from the gambling halls ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few limitations requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is required to be mostly Thai; however, investment sources are ambiguous. The borders are officially open from 09:00 to 1700, and even though visas are apparently needed to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is accurate of many border crossings.
The original Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only a single gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored boat gambling den, contains one hundred and fifty slot machine games and 60 tables. The Naga river boat is open all hours with forty two tables of mini-baccarat banque, 4 tables of chemin de fer, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are one hundred and fifty slot machines and five tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four one armed bandits and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slots and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and 96 table games, including eighty seven baccarat (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slots and sixty six of the normal table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-inclusive vacation and hotel compound that contains numerous amenities in addition to the casino, which houses 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and 88 gaming tables.
